The Faculty Appeal
The Faculty is seeking to raise £2 million for the permanent endowment of the 1896 Professorship of Philosophy, the chair held formerly by Moore and Wittgenstein, among others, and currently by Simon Blackburn.
Thanks to the generous support of numerous alumni and friends, £1.5 million had already been raised by October 2009. We then received the wonderful news that an anonymous donor had pledged £250,000 and issued a challenge to others to match that sum and thereby help us reach our target. We hope to achieve our goal in the near future and thus secure the future of this illustrious Professorship. We also plan to add to its prestige by giving it an appropriate new name, taking into account the views of key donors. Gifts to the appeal will form a trust fund, whose income will meet the costs of the position in perpetuity, with any surplus be available to the Faculty for other purposes within the research and teaching of philosophy.
