Academic Visitors to the Faculty of Philosophy
Many philosophers pass through Cambridge each year for shorter or longer periods, meeting up in informal ways with friends and colleagues in the Philosophy Faculty. The following brief remarks are addressed to those who wish to establish a more formal status as an Academic Visitor to the Faculty. Please note that the Academic Visitor Status scheme is NOT open to PhD candidates. Any enquiries about Visiting Student Status should be sent to: phil-admin@lists.cam.ac.uk
Facilities
As an Academic Visitor, you will be able to attend any lectures and seminars in the University, use the facilities in the graduate centre (desk space and computer facilities) and the libraries, and join in the life of the Faculty.
Fee
There is a charge for this of £400 (plus V.A.T.) per term. It is possible, in special circumstances, to apply for a reduction of this fee and any prospective visitor who wishes to plead special hardship may make such an application.
Supervision
We should, perhaps, point out that the offer of Academic Visitor Status does not include supervision of your work on the part of the Faculty but you are welcome to discuss your work informally.
Sponsor
We are particularly interested in welcoming visitors whose research areas overlap with the interests of our own staff in order to cultivate interaction. Would you therefore please consult the list of Faculty Teaching Staff and suggest the name of a possible sponsor when contacting Mrs Margrit Edwards me10005@cam.ac.uk
Individual lecturers are not in a position to grant Academic Visitor Status to prospective visitors. All applications have to be considered at one of the meetings of the Faculty Board.
Procedure
If you would like to apply for Academic Visitor Status you should consult the list of Faculty Teaching Staff. Then:
- write to Mrs Margrit Edwards me10005@cam.ac.uk and suggest the name of a possible sponsor. You also need to provide a short outline of the proposed research you wish to carry out in Cambridge, your estimated arrival and departure dates, and your full CV.
The Home Office has introduced new rules on the treatment of Academic Visitors and you must check with the British Embassy in your home country whether you need a work permit.
We also need:
- two academic references, one of which should make clear your current position in your university or institution. You should ask your referees to address their references to Mrs Margrit Edwards me10005@cam.ac.uk.
Once we have received your full application, it will be considered at the next meeting of the Faculty Board. Mrs Edwards will then inform you whether the Faculty is able to offer you Academic Visitor Status.
Deposit
If you are offered Academic Visitor Status you will be asked to pay a deposit of £100.
